05 June 2020

As of today,  23 088 people in South Africa have fully recovered from the coronavirus.  Globally, there has been a total of 3 304 555 recoveries.

The Khenana informal settlement in Durban has set a beautiful example to the rest of the country of what can be achieved when a community works together towards a mutual goal. Masks, gloves, and sanitizer are being purchased for everyone with the money made from selling cabbage and spinach that were grown in two community gardens.  Residents of Khenana rotate the garden work with those who have obs (approximately 40% of the population) taking the weekend shifts.

As South Africans keep spreading hope and kindness, the UK also has something to celebrate.  England’s Covid-19 count has shrunk in half in the past week! According to the Office for National Statistics, there are currently only 53, 000 infected people in the country which equates to 0.1% of the entire population.

Yesterday, the Gauteng Division of the High Court has declared that both Alert Level 4 and Alert Level 3 Lockdown regulations are both invalid and unconstitutional. The court did, however, suspend the invalidity declaration for a period of 14 days which means that Level 3 restrictions will remain in place – for now. While the cabinet is yet to release a full statement regarding the judgment, the ruling could see the South African economy reopen fully a lot sooner than anticipated!

As the days are getting shorter and the temperatures drop, community feeding schemes are working harder than ever before to provide warm, nutritious meals to vulnerable individuals.  Individuals from all walks of life continue to unite for a greater good by donating money, essential goods, and time towards the many outstanding initiatives providing much-needed relief.

In Wuhan, China, now new Covid-19 cases were detected for the second day running – a wonderful accomplishment for the city in which the pandemic originated.  An increasing number of countries are starting to show more recoveries than active cases.  Even in 14 of India’s states, the number of patients who have recovered is more than those admitted in hospital. The overall recovery rate in India now stands at 48.19% –  a significant increase from the 38.29% recorded on 18 May 2020.

Since yesterday, the country has recorded an additional 482 COVID-19 recoveries. Globally,  a total of 2 926 932 patients have tested negative for the virus – an increase of 72 507. Even South Africa’s hardest-hit province, the Western Cape, has significantly more recoveries than active coronavirus cases.

South Africa reached a highly-anticipated milestone yesterday as the country commenced Level 3 lockdown. Not only will the increased sense of normalcy give the local economy a very-welcome boost, but it will also have a direct positive impact on the mental well-being of thousands of South Africans who were battling with cabin fever.

In international news, the Chinese city of Wuhan celebrated a huge recovery milestone. For the first time since the outbreak started in the city, no new asymptomatic cases were reported. In Spain, NO new Covid-19 deaths were reported for a period of 24 hours – for the first time since March! This is an amazing feat for a country that has been one of the worst-affected in Europe.

On the research front, South Korea’s Celltrion is expected to commence an in-human drug trial as early as July. This development was announced after the NHS confirmed that UK hospitals will be testing 5 new drugs in a bid to find a treatment for Covid-19.

There seems to be no limit to the kindness of our local sporting stars. Last week we reported on the astounding work the Bryan Habana Foundation is doing in Cape Town.  On Sunday, 31 May 2020, the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) together with Lions Rugby players brought some much-need relief to communities in Gauteng.  Elton Jantjies, captain of the Lions, and some of his teammates purchased essential food items that they packed, together with blankets, for distribution in vulnerable communities in the region.

The tourism industry in the Western Cape and Freestate breathed a sigh of relief as the Table Mountain National Park and Golden Gate National Park both reopened today. Although a small victory, i is definitely a step in the right direction for the industry.

Since yesterday, South Africa has recorded an additional 1023 patients have been officially classified as COVID-19 recoveries. Globally, 2  707 829 patients have tested negative for the virus – an increase of 57 274.

Tomorrow, 01 June, South Africa is moving down to Level 3 lockdown. While some uncertainty remains with regards to certain restrictions, there are a number of changes to look forward too:

  • We will no longer be limited to a 3-hour window during which to exercise in -outdoor exercise will now be allowed from 6am to 6pm
  • The tourism industry will slowly reopen – game parks, and private game farms may reopen although they may only offer only self-drive excursions. Hikes will also be permitted, but not in groups. Accommodation activities such as those rendered by hotels and lodges will resume in a limited capacity,  catering to those on business or work trips.
  • Wholesale-, retail-, and spaza shops may reopen completely
  • The sale of hot food in supermarkets will resume and restaurants will be allowed to offer takeaway meals. Drive-throughs will also be allowed to operate.

After living under very strict lockdown regulations for more than 60 days, any sort of reprieve is very welcome. As long as common sense prevails and social distancing and hygiene protocols are adhered to, we can conquer Covid-19!

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned normal humans into superheroes – and it is not only our frontline workers going the extra mile to feed, heal, uplift, and inspire.

In Pietermaritzburg, business owner and sound engineer Sean Swanson is creating an MTV-like platform at home to showcase the immense talent of our local musicians. The SA music industry, which has been hit particularly hard by lockdown, is being handed a much-needed lifeline by passionate individuals such as Sean who values our local musicians.

In Cape Town, 20-year-old Blake Pittaway (who is the founder of Project18, a CPT-based NPO) recently donated one ton of dog food to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to assist during lockdown. This wonderful gesture came naturally to Pittaway who has been actively involved in charity work since he was 17.

There is no such thing as a small act of kindness as every effort has a mammoth impact on the life of the recipient.  Together, through kindness and positivity, we will beat COVID-19!

Since yesterday,  South Africa has recorded an additional 919  COVID-19 recoveries, bringing the total recoveries to 14 370.  Globally, 2 593 460 recoveries have been recorded.

Acts of kindness are taking place all around us and even big corporate names and local celebrities are getting in on the action.  Facebook and Instagram are enabling their users to support local business entities such as restaurants, gyms, and hairdressers through a new and innovative gift card feature.

Social media users can find special offers from participating merchants on a ‘Support Local Business’ advert on their Facebook newsfeed, a Gift Card button on their Instagram profile, or by means of a Gift Card sticker in ‘Stories’. By purchasing a gift card you basically provide a local business with a much-needed cash injection during a very difficult time.

There are a number of local sporting heroes who continue to rally their support behind various feeding schemes and community upliftment initiatives.  Former Springbok star Bryan Habana has once again made headlines after his foundation donated R40,000 towards a local food redistribution entity.

By #UnmaskingCovid19  we consciously refute all the negativity that we are exposed to on a daily basis, to great benefit of our mental health.

South African business entities and individuals continue to step forward to provide assistance to both frontline workers and vulnerable communities.

Airbnb recently announced the launch of their #GetBehindTheMask campaign which is a host-led movement aimed at providing relief to communities severely impacted by the pandemic. The initiative, which was launched through a partnership with Afrika Tikkun and the Western Cape governments’s Maskathon, will start with an informative online demonstration on how to make facemasks as well as a call to action from the host community, challenging other to make masks themselves. The campaign will also include a relief fund to support entrepreneurs in the tourism sector who were part of the Airbnb Africa Academy as well as who suffered a great financial loss due to COVID-19.

27 May 2020

In the past 24 hours, South Africa recorded a further 824 COVID-19 recoveries, bringing the total recoveries to 12 741. Positive stories from coronavirus survivors, such as this one, continue to surface, giving us hope and negating the popular belief that getting infected is a death sentence.

Finally, some good news from the Government! After a lengthy period of uncertainty, and the circulation of various fake reports, the Health Ministry has finally confirmed that the entire country will move down to Lockdown Alert Level 3 on 01 June.  Dr. Zweli Mkhize stated that the government has taken the necessary steps to intervene in all the areas that are regarded as hotspots. Additionally, various experts and specialists will be deployed to help implement the measures necessary to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

A group of engineers at the Faculty of Engineering of the North-West University (NWU) have developed a sustainable solution to screen pupils for COVID-19 by making use of cellphones. The engineers created a screening and data-capturing kit that will involve every person with permission to enter a property to be issued with an ID token. All entry/exit points will be equipped with a recording station that will house a token reader, digital thermometer, and database, as well as an easy-to-use interface on an Android smart device. The kit can not only save a significant amount of time, but have an astounding impact on lockdown screening protocols as well. Truly South African ingenuity at its best!

Random acts of kindness also continue to go viral as South Africans embrace Ubuntu during these difficult times with community-based initiatives stepping up efforts nationwide to assist the most vulnerable residents.

26 May 2020

Statistics – 26 May 2020

In the past 24 hours, an additional 817 patients have been officially classified as COVID-19 recoveries.

In other good news, the Western Cape High Court ruled that NGOs can not be prevented from distributing food to vulnerable community members.  Community-based organizations and soup kitchen operators welcomed the ruling which ordered that the National Government can’t prevent people from exercising their rights to both distribute and receive food. What a great win!

Also in the Western Cape, a group of Cape Town doctors established the Masks for Medics campaign to crowdfund Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers taking care of home-based COVID-19 patients. The Masks for Medics team consists of Dr. Anthony Smith, Dr. Lauren Lee, Dr. Sonia Hough, Dr. Julie Etellin, Dr. Sarahan Brophy,  and Dr. Natalia Novikova who aim to provide the much-needed service to healthcare workers in the Cape Town CBD, the Cape Flats, and a number of local township communities.

Remember to Stay Safe, Keep your Distance, Wash your Hands, and Wear a Mask.
