It has been my childhood dream to expose my parents to the life they never had when they were growing up.  I grew up in a township called Illovo, in Durban, and airplane flights, hotels, and the like were beyond our imagination.  However, I kept telling myself that one day I will change my family’s history.

Life has changed

Yesterday history was made when my parents finally took their first flight from Durban to Johannesburg.  This wasn’t just a flight. It was a sign that our family’s story is changing; our quality of life is improving.  After I got my job in a bank in Sandton last year, I kept reciting this phrase to them: “Life has changed.”

My parents have always thought that flights are too expensive, but I showed them that there isn’t a big difference in price compared to traveling by land between Durban and Johannesburg.  I made sure that my mom got to sit in the window seat, so that she would fully experience the journey. ‘Overjoyed’ is the word to describe their reaction! They spoke about it throughout the weekend!

‘Overjoyed’ is the word to describe their reaction!

While in Johannesburg, they got to see my place in Parkmore, Sandton, they slept at the Burgers Park Hotel in Pretoria, and they attended church to listen to their favourite televangelist pastor!  They also enjoyed the Gautrain. They were thrilled by everything they saw and did.

The next goal is to take them on a proper holiday here in South Africa, just to show them that the days of suffering are long gone! #ImStaying
