This confident, talented young lad is already an inspiration to many.

Jan Louwrens, 11 years old, is from Paarl, in the Western Cape. He is one of the most inspiring youngsters I have had the pleasure to talk to. When I told him how inspiring his story is to me, he confidently responded, “That’s the point!” In my mind’s eye I could see his chest puffed up with pride. Yes indeed, this confident, talented young lad is already an inspiration to many. And will no doubt grow to do much more of that.

The stories bring the robots to life, and highlight their fascinating characters.

With the help of his family, Jan began his first business at the age of nine. Designing robots and printing them on T-shirts. Not only does each robot have its own intricate designs, it also has its own detailed story. You will find the delightful stories of Jan’s seven robots on his Baggo Apparel website. He goes into an incredible amount of detail, both in the stories and the designs. The stories bring the robots to life, and highlight their fascinating characters. 

Captain Stay Safe is a robot which has come to the rescue of concerned children and parents.

Captain Stay Safe is a robot which has come to the rescue of concerned children and parents. He tells the story of COVID-19, week by week, in all eleven official languages. This is a collaboration with Food for Mzansi. The purpose of this important venture is to help children – as the name Captain Stay Safe suggests. He teaches them to stay safe, especially when they return to school.

Describing himself as a designer and inventor, Jan is also a researcher and a writer. True to his nature, he has been using his spare time during lockdown well. He has been researching siege warfare, writing and designing his book on this intricate subject. 

Jan is fascinated with the inner workings of, it seems, everything he takes an interest in. This deep fascination is unusual in a child of his age.

Jan’s parting advice: “Stay safe, take precautions and try to entertain yourself.”
