Masiphumelele is an IsiXhosa word that translates to ‘Let us succeed‘. It is a fitting name for this community of people (with unofficially 30 000 residents) whose spirit of endurance has been needed over the decades.
These words are still an expression of their hope of better times to come.
#ImStaying member, Tarn Hedley, recently shared a song written by her father, Paul de Villiers. There is perhaps no better time than the present for our community to hear this beautiful song. It is a song of overcoming, a song of determination and focus. It epitomizes not only the resilient people of Masiphumelele, but of ALL South Africans. Rise, Mzansi. Let us Succeed.

I’m so proud of my dad, Paul de Villiers, for writing this song called “Masi”. It sends such an uplifting message about our country and how, even through hard times, our people remain positive and continue to lead from a place of love. The song itself is performed by a group of South Africans, all from different cultures and backgrounds, but who have come together to create something beautiful. There is nothing more inspiring than when the people of South Africa come together to celebrate our vibrant culture, in all its many forms and colours. This is why #I’mStaying. Let’s continue to spread love in South Africa, through music, through art, through kindness. Masiphumelele! Let us Succeed!
