Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize has announced that South Africa has recorded its first fatalities due to the coronavirus.

He stated: “This morning, we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first deaths resulting from Covid-19.”

“These two deaths occurred in the Western Cape. One at a private hospital and the other at a public hospital,”

“We will give more details later on.”

The health ministry also announced that the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections around the country had surpassed 1,000.

South Africans are urged to PLEASE adhere to the lockdown regulations and stay at home in order to help flatten the curve.

WATCH: What does it mean to 'flatten the curve'?

Flatten the Curve

What is the curve?

The “curve” refers to the projected number of people who will contract COVID-19 over a period of time.

A steep curve means an over-burdened health system.

The curve takes on different shapes, depending on the virus’s infection rate. It could be a steep curve, in which the virus spreads aggressively. In this case, counts keep doubling at a consistent rate & the total number of cases skyrocket to peak within a few weeks.

Infection curves with a steep rise also have a steep fall. After the virus infects pretty much everyone who can be infected, case numbers begin to drop quickly too.

The faster the infection curve rises, the quicker the health care system will get overloaded beyond its capacity to treat people. That’s why the Minister of Health Dr. Zweli Mkhize has said we must heed precautionary measures to #flattenthecurve.
