We are weeks into living in a locked down country. Learning institutions have closed. Some school-going youth might have already given up. Given up on opening books because of that one topic, needing the teacher’s explanation to make it understandable. Others might be wondering. Wondering if they are ever again going to put on their uniform and march to class to chow curriculum.

Some school-going youth might have already given up

These school-going youth’s virtual pleas were heard. Heard and heeded by those who were once like them. In response, some organisations, students and former students have decided to engage with learners. Utilizing social media platforms these volunteers are covering a variety of topics and various high school subjects. More are joining the good initiative, eager to help explain to learners what was once hard for them to learn themselves.

They are filling in the gaps in the learning experience, coming alongside these young people

The Keep That Gold Shining (KTG) organisation offers mathematics for grades 10, 11 and 12. By using live streams sessions and short videos on their Facebook page, they are filling in the gaps in the learning experience, coming alongside these young people. They are in a process of building a Facebook library, where learners can access material of all senior grades with as much information as possible. Tuelo Selokela is a recent BEd in FET alumnus from the University of Pretoria. He is offering Physical Science and Mathematics lessons for grades 10 to 12. His live feeds can be accessed on Facebook.

Those offering the lessons are pleading with others to join the initiative and help learners keep busy with their school work

Data can be problematic at times. For those situations, the group has the help of Khomotso Legodi. Khomotso, a medical technologist, providing lessons in the form of posts on Facebook. He covers Economics, Life Science, Business studies and Geography. All this in the comfort of the learner’s homes. Those offering the lessons are pleading with others to join the initiative and help learners keep busy with their school work. We are passing through a historical phase. Let us all earn and carry high a title of doing good by others.
