We are only as wealthy as what we give back and what we leave behind… ‘Our good deeds that benefit mankind’
#imstaying is in full support of #OperationAvalonRevive which forms part of our
“I’m Staying One Million New Jobs for South Africa” project to increase employment, reduce poverty, eradicate crime and give back dignity to as many hardworking individuals.
#imstaying donated Cleaning Equipment (Wheelbarrows, Spades, Rakes), Clothing (T-shirts), Head Umbrellas. We will continue with daily feeding for a team of 20 who have been newly employed to clean up and maintain the upkeep of a local Cemetery.
Many have stated that it’s Government and City Parks responsibility with contracted parties, but a decision was taken not to wait, but rather do it with the help of the local community until the relevant authorities have the funds and capacity to sustain this.
To give context, many Graves in the Avalon Cemetery have been inconsistently maintained due to lack of funds, service delivery etc.
Avalon Cemetery is central to millions of South Africans from nearby neighborhoods in Gauteng, Johannesburg South.
Visitors cannot identify existing Graves due to overgrowth of weeds, boards being removed due to vandalism and theft. There’s also a water drainage problem. When it rains, roads are flooded due to poor road maintenance in some areas making access to graves difficult.
Electricity to the Cemetery is partially fixed making it dangerous and inviting criminal activity, due to minimal visibility for night burials as well.
Water supply is no longer available and Jojo tanks are required for prayer facilities and watering of graves/plants. The Cemetery was recently vandalized and additional security personnel also been brought in.
We anticipate the task team to grow to 50 new employees in a year funded by the community and private sponsors / donors and with the help and support of many others.
Well done to Shahim Ismail of Lethal Forces Security Services (who initiated #OperationAvalonRevive), the team with the various community sponsors (#imstaying NPC, UMS, MICA Lenasia, Laxmi Cash and Carry, Mohammed Amien Kola – Jozi Tippers, Nazier and Shabier, Rehana Bawa, Khalil Mohamed, Firoze Ibrahim, Mohammed Amla) and various other sponsors who continue to support this humble initiative.
#imstaying will also be hosting an event at La Grandiose (Gauteng) in aid of fundraising to assist in supporting and maintaining the upkeep of #operationavalonrevive.
An extended thanks also goes out to other community activists and their teams (YAB Services, Shuabe Ahmed Bayett) and organisations (Saaberie Chishty Burial Services, CIT, Jamiatul Ulama) and various private sponsors and organisations who also play their part in assisting in the upkeep of the Cemetery.
#ImStaying puts out this challenge to every South African to please visit and pay our respect to those whom we have lost. That we also maintain the upkeep of their final resting place which will inevitably become ours as well.
