Context and Background

The South African Muslim Census & Hajj Quota Survey is a nationwide project by #ImStaying NPC, and affiliates, to gather verified data on the Muslim population of South Africa.

Current estimates place the South African Muslim population between 1.6 million and 3.5 million, with the 1.6 million figure from Stats SA now outdated.

Our goal is to ensure a fair and just allocation of Hajj places in line with international standards and the true size of our Ummah.

Currently, South Africa’s Hajj quota has been reduced from 2,500 to only 1,140 pilgrims, while estimates show 1.6–3.5 million Muslims in the country.

This survey empowers every Muslim to help correct this imbalance by contributing accurate demographic information — data that will be presented to:

  • His Excellency, the President of the Republic of South Africa
  • The Honourable Minister & Deputy of Social Development (South Africa)
  • The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia (in South Africa)
  • The Saudi Ministry of Hajj & Umrah (NUSUK Platform)
  • The National Statistics Agency (Statistics South Africa / Stats SA)
  • The Information Regulator South Africa (IRSA)
  • The Parliamentary Ethics & Oversight Committee (South Africa)

This effort also appeals for 500 sponsored Hajj places and reduced Hajj package rates to support reverts and financially constrained pilgrims.
